Dr. Carl A. Fields Memorial University Service Award recognizes administrators, staff and faculty who through their careers and service to Princeton, exemplify the type of performance and spirit that ABPA considers noteworthy for their excellence and value as symbols to other Princetonians.
Carl A. "Doc" Fields was the first Dean of African-American descent at Princeton and in the Ivy League. In a tenure of seven years, 1964-1971, he used creative yet practical approaches to set up a slew of noteworthy programs. These include the surrogate family hosting program, the community service summer work program, and student associations as well as centers to serve the need of persons from underrepresented populations on campus, particularly African- American and Jewish and (at that time) female students.
Dr. Fields also ushered in the creation of the Association of Black Collegians, the first student organization at Princeton focused on the specific concerns of African-Americans and a forerunner to the Association of Black Princeton Alumni. He had a founding role and was one of the first officers.
